The entry for the war diary of The 9th Battalion, The Highland Light Infantry for 21 February 1915 reads:
“Situation quiet. We have hired a piano and companies take it in turns to have concerts nightly. This is having an excellent effect upon their spirits.”
And, that piano continued to have an excellent effect on the spirits of the men as they spent their spare time enjoying a sing-song – so much so that by August 1915, bands were giving regular concert parties and cheering other units around them!
There are no photographs of the actual piano; however, these show a “mini” band and “dressing-up”, presumably for a concert, although for what purpose is debatable – answers on a postcard!
